Blogging Bites #94

Hey Reader,

Thanks for taking the time to read through my rant last week! I got quite a few responses, which I always appreciate! ☺️

There seems to be some concern & conflicting opinions about recipe card placement after Google updated its guidelines.

Do we move the recipe card to the top of the post and risk losing ad revenue? Or leave it at the bottom of the post?

Some SEOs say Google's next update might take their guideline updates into consideration, and food bloggers are worried it'll affect their rankings.

Personally, I think it's too soon to worry or make any drastic changes. I'll reassess if my site is impacted, but my readers seem to like how my blog posts are structured, so I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing!

IMO having a Jump To button at the top of recipe posts is a win-win 👍

It's good for SEO and creates a better experience for your readers!

When we went over SEO & UX in a group coaching call the other week, we talked about the different types of readers food blogs get.

One type is what I call the Recipe Hunter who just wants to get straight to the recipe card. Having a Jump To button accommodates these readers.

Jump To Button Best Practices ✅

1️⃣ Make it easily accessible at the top of your post.

2️⃣ Make sure it actually jumps to the recipe card (not an ad or recommended content).

Check Your Jump To Button ⬇️

Open up a private browser on desktop & mobile 📲
→Does the Jump To button stand out so you can easily find it? ✅
→Can you access it without scrolling on mobile? ✅

Okay, now click on it! 🖱️
→Does it jump to the recipe card? ✅
→Does it take you to something else (an ad, recommended posts, etc.) or nowhere at all? ❌

Check if your readers are using it 👀
→In Microsoft Clarity, check your post's heatmaps to see if your Jump To button is getting a lot of clicks:

Tip: In the upper lefthand corner, you can toggle between desktop, tablet, & mobile!

If it isn't getting clicked, that might be a sign that it isn't easily accessible to your readers.

You might also want to click on the dropdown by Tap (next to the desktop/tablet/mobile buttons) and check if there are any Dead or Rage taps. This could indicate the button isn't working properly.

I hope this helps!

Happy blogging!

-Kayla
