Broken links break trust! 🔗

Blogging Bites #86

Hey Reader,

Real quick - thank you to everyone who's filled out the group coaching survey! Reading through your responses is so helpful & motivating as I build out the program 🤗

Today I'm going to take you along with me as I clean up my broken links!

Broken links are links on your site that go to a page that's no longer valid.

The page could've gotten taken down, your site's server could be down (another reason why having a good host is so important!), or maybe the URL changed (which we typically want to avoid doing!).

There are a few big reasons we want to monitor & fix broken links:

  1. Worse user experience - have you ever tried finding an answer or product you really liked by clicking on a link from someone's site, only to be taken to a 404 page? It can be frustrating 😅 This not only reduces trust with your audience, but Google can see it too and may think of your site as low quality.
  2. Impacts indexing - Google decides what to show in its search results by crawling and indexing pages. If it's crawling your site and comes across a broken link, it won't index it.
  3. Wastes crawl budget - this isn't a concern for smaller sites, but Google has a limit on how many pages it'll crawl in a session (AKA a "crawl budget"). If you have a broken link that Google crawls, that's one less non-broken link that can get crawled & indexed.

There are many tools out there that can help you check for broken links. Broken Link Checker is my go-to plugin for this (and it's free)!

Not sure how to use it? Come along for the ride as I use it to check mine in this quick 3-minute video!

Happy blogging!
